Module 2

The main mental health disorders in old age: behavior changes, changes in the daily life, and non-pharmacological approaches.

Practical material

Activity 1

Aim of this activity is to develop learners’ skills to apply in practice the knowledge regarding the identification of behavioural changes in people with neurodegenerative disorders and its possible causes, based on a case study.

Multimedia Resources

The following video is explaining in detail, through a role-play, one of the behavioural and psychological symptoms that can occur in dementia, namely WANDERING, and also possible management solutions for this demanding behavioural disruption.

After viewing the video, participants will reflect on how these management options could be used in practice – which would they choose, how they would put in place these solutions, and which of them could have a positive impact the care practice.

The questions for self-reflecting will be the following:

  • Which of these management strategies would be more effective?
  • Which situations would I recommend for using in caregiving process?
  • What impact would this have on the care practice?

Activity 2

Aim of this activity is to develop learners’ skills to identify changes in daily life for people with neurodegenerative disorders and for their partners and their abilities to propose coping strategies.

Activity 3

Aim of this activity is to develop learners’ ability to identify and implement non-pharmacological approaches for people with neurodegenerative disorders in care facilities.
