Module 5

Communication and Socio-emotional Skills Development for Implementing Theatre Activities with Older Persons.

Practical material

Multimedia Resources

This video introduces participants to the activity “One Word Story,” providing an example of how Active Learning Activity #1 (The Story Circle) could be implemented. “One Word Story” is an excellent game for promoting teamwork, listening, communication, and cooperation skills. This video offers a visual example of how to implement the activity effectively and achieve the activity’s objectives in a group setting.

Activity 1

The Story Circle
Improve listening skills, promote creative storytelling, and encourage clear articulation in a group setting.

Multimedia Resources

This video provides an example of how the Mirroring Game can be implemented and serves as inspiration for using this activity in a group setting. The Mirroring Game is a powerful exercise for developing non-verbal communication skills, enhancing empathy, and building trust between participants. One person leads with gestures, facial expressions, and body language while the other mirrors these actions as precisely as possible, helping participants become more aware of subtle non-verbal cues.

The video illustrates how the Mirroring Game encourages creative expression and collaboration, promoting a deeper connection and shared understanding among group members. It is especially valuable in settings with older adults, as it enables participants to communicate and connect through movement, making it a useful tool for those who may face challenges with verbal expression.

Activity 2

Aim of this activity is to develop learners’ skills to identify changes in daily life for people with neurodegenerative disorders and for their partners and their abilities to propose coping strategies.

Multimedia Resources

This video introduces participants to role-play games and provides an example of how the activity can be implemented in a group setting. It serves as inspiration for participants organising role-playing scenarios. The video focuses on scenarios where participants give feedback on social behaviour, explore communication techniques, or show genuine interest in one another.

Role-play games are highly effective for improving socio-emotional skills and enhancing communication, empathy, and conflict resolution. In a role-play setting, participants take on different perspectives, practising active listening and effective verbal and non-verbal communication in realistic, emotionally engaging scenarios. For older adults who may struggle with verbal communication or emotional regulation, role-play offers a structured space to practise these skills. This activity allows participants to explore and better understand others’ emotions and responses, promoting empathy and emotional intelligence.

Activity 3

Aim of this activity is to develop learners’ ability to identify and implement non-pharmacological approaches for people with neurodegenerative disorders in care facilities.
